01 / Introduction
Overview
The KitchenAid Grain and Rice Cooker represents a category-first innovation in countertop appliances. By observing real user journeys — from measuring grain to monitoring cook times — the design team identified key user pain points. These frustrations inspired an intelligent appliance featuring built-in weighing, automatic water dosing, and tailor-made preset programs.
02 / The Friction
The Challenge
“Users shouldn't have to think about complex water-to-grain ratios, timings, or temperature adjustments the product should handle it all.”
Traditional rice cookers require tedious manual measuring, constant guesswork about water ratios, and continuous monitoring to avoid boiling over. Our ethnographical research revealed that 73% of users reported inconsistent results due to imprecise measurements and varying moisture needs of different grain types. The challenge was to completely eliminate every point of friction between raw grain and a beautifully cooked, textured outcome, while honoring a compact and premium kitchen presence.
03 / Strategy
Our Approach
We applied user-centered research to unearth core kitchen behaviors. Observing how home cooks interact with legacy cookers drove the creation of an integrated weighing mechanism.
Observing users struggling with imprecise manual measuring cups.

Mapping confusion over distinct water requirements across wild rice, brown rice, quinoa, and oats.
Co-designing with culinary scientists to translate weight calculations into optimized heating curves.

The Solution
The final product introduces a state-of-the-art automatic water-dosing pump and precision weighing plate. Home cooks simply add grains; the integrated system weighs the contents, auto-dispenses precise water down to the milliliter, and dynamically executes multi-stage cooking.
